Who was Robbie McKinley?:- Robbie McKinley was an American skateboarder, photographer, and artist. Skateboarding communities across the world are mourning the loss of legendary skateboarder, Robbie McKinley. He died at the age of 43 on March 28, 2023.

Who was Robbie McKinley?

Robbie McKinley was born in Los Angeles to Mr. McKinley (Father) and Yvonne McKinley (Mother).

 

He was raised by his parents. He grew up with a passion for skateboarding. He was a married man and had a child named Jennifer Geckas. He relocated several times during his teen years in pursuit of his dreams.

In the fifth grade, he moved to California’s Inland Empire and later relocated to Florida with his mother. However, this was only a minor setback as he was already being noticed by Society USA, a skateboarding team.

Fortunately, his mother permitted him to fly back to Los Angeles to shoot a promo. After returning to Los Angeles, he stayed with his father in the city.

Robbie McKinley was also known as McCrooks. He was known for his skateboarding approach. His famous highlight was pulling off the switch frontside heelflip at UCLA.

Robbie McKinley Career

Robbie McKinley’s talent and unique style to play skateboarding made him a legend in the skateboarding community.

He was one of the founders of the skateboarding team “Society,”. He contributed to modern-day skateboarding and his contributions were immense and helped to shape the sport into what it is today.

Later Years in Web Design and Surfing

McKinley swapped the buzzing Los Angeles life for Hawaii in his final months. He completed his graduation from The Art Institute Of California.

He worked for over 10 years as an interactive designer he graduated until his death. He specialized in product design and worked with the likes of MySpace, Amazon, and HP.

Robbie reminisced about his young skateboarding days on Instagram, but as a resident of the island, he preferred surfing. He found solace in the peaceful waters of Hawaii, away from the chaos of the city.

Tributes Pour in for McKinley

McKinley’s close friend Mackenzie Eisenhour confirmed his death on Instagram with a throwback image of McKinley sitting on an armchair on the sidewalk.

He wrote,

“One of the best humans I had the privilege of knowing.”

He wrote,

“Probably my favorite skate style of all time at his peak. Groomsman at my wedding, stand-up roommate, and the first person outside of the hospital to meet my daughter Luca when we got home.”

Skateboarder Jimmy Pelletier commemorated the star on Facebook. He said,

“We met you in the summer of 1998 when our tours crossed in Canada.”

He recalled,

“You were on the Blind Skateboards tour. You had such a rad style and just looked cool on a skateboard. You rocked your gear so well. Love and prayers to you and your family Robbie McKinley. Ride on…”
